Thaddeus Stanton (1835-1900) was a native of Indiana. In 1851 he moved to Iowa and briefly wrote for an abolitionist newspaper. He fought with John Brown in the Kansas Border War, joined a three-month regiment at the outbreak of the Civil War, and, after a short time in Iowa public office, organized and led the 19th Iowa Infantry.
